Asha congratulates Friends of Asha- GB Dr Louise Dolan on her marriage

Dr Louise Dolan is a senior Consultant in Rheumatology in the UK. She has been a friend of Asha for many years, and has been to Asha on a number of occasions.

I have the best news ever! She just got married to Matt, and they asked all their friends to make donations to Asha instead of giving them wedding presents.

What a wonderful way to live.

Warmest congratulations Louise and Matt for a life together filled with love, laughter and happiness. Thank you for your generosity especially at this time when the poor are going through so much suffering.

Asha student Sugra receives an urgent healthcare intervention by Asha

Hello friends, yesterday as I was running my clinic on Zoom, I suddenly heard that Asha university student Sugra (whose English teacher is Asha USA Trustee Jean Peteet) was lying in bed quite sick. I called for her to come to the Seelampur clinic. It was found that she was really pale and her BP was 80/50. She was filling dizzy and. could hardly stand. I asked Asha team member Shiv to take her to the hospital emergency immediately. Her father refused saying there was nothing wrong with her. I prevailed upon her father and Shiv took her to the emergency of a public hospital in the vicinity. The Junior doctor there refused to examine her or admit her. I then spoke with him over the phone and said to him that if he did not immediately give her IV fluids and stabilize her, I would be forced to take the matter up with higher authorities. He became apprehensive after the conversation, and admitted her. Shiv and Aditya, both Asha warriors were with her all the time.

In the meanwhile, I spoke with a colleague at a larger hospital, requesting for him to admit and investigate her, and he did that.

He told the family that she required immediate blood transfusion but that she was AB positive and they did not have this blood group in the blood bank.

The Asha warriors immediately went to the Red Cross blood bank, donated one unit of blood each, and they gave them 2 units of AB positive blood in exchange, for Sugra.

She has now received blood transfusion, and will be further investigated to find out the cause of the anemia.

What would have happened to Sugra without Asha? She could have gone into hypoxia and had a system shut down if we had not intervened immediately. So many obstacles from family, from hospitals. The Never Give Up spirit is critical for change and transformation and healing. It is a hallmark of true compassion.

Asha COVID-19 Emergency Response: Kalkaji’s Municipal Councillor visits Asha’s Kalkaji slum community

Hi everyone, I’ve been encouraging all locally elected representatives to be invited to visit the Asha communities. These relationships are critical to the living conditions and needs of slum residents.

Here is a Municipal Councillor, elected rep of a large area in and around Kalkaji. He is giving out Asha grocery bags at the Asha Centre. He feels respected and appreciated, and in turn realizes the value of the Asha team and their wonderful efforts. He announced that he would always be available to Asha and to the community for problems related to sanitation etc. that fall under his jurisdiction. What a great ally we have found in him.

Asha celebrates the work of Asha nurses and paramedics during the second wave

Our wonderfully brave, passionate and competent nurses and paramedics gathered at my home to celebrate how they saved hundreds of lives during this second wave.

We salute them all for their loving and dedicated service to the poor. They roamed every lane and every street looking for sick covid patients and looked after all patients in the comfort of their homes. The passion in their care and follow up was admired by one and all.

They often came back late in the evening, at night, and in the early hours of the morning to see how the patients were doing. Our phones rang all evening and all night with patient related emergencies and need for urgent treatment interventions.

Cheers to our nurses and paramedics!

Asha graduate Shiv completes his First Year of Masters in Social Work

Asha graduate Shiv from Seelampur Asha community completes his First Year of Masters in Social Work with good grades!

We are celebrating together at my home tonight. He did it in the English medium that was really hard for him. However, the guidance, teaching and mentoring of Victoria Thampi, Chair of FOA Ireland has made it possible, along with his own hard work. Social Work is his passion.

He will soon begin the second year of his Masters. Before we know, he will have a double Masters, one in Political Science and the other in Social Work. He is a fantastic Asha Team member and is continuing to transform many lives. He has the wonderful capacity to influence young people and inspire them to reach great heights.
